- December 3rd (2011-2012 YSHS Orange & Black Swim Meet)
The tradition continues at the York Suburban Natatorium with the annual “Orange & Black” Intrasquad Swim Meet which pit the YS Girls Swim Team against the YS Boys Swim Team. Both squads came in to the meet excited and ready for their first opportunities to race this season in a fun, relaxed setting. The meet serves many purposes. The first of which is to give the swimmers an opportunity to race before the actual dual meet season begins. The Orange & Black meet also allows parents to watch their son or daughter swim for the first time this season. For parents of newcomers to the sport, it was the first time to ever watch their son or daughter compete in a race. Last, it offers an opportunity for the coaches to see where each swimmer’s progress is in technique, speed, and endurance. After this meet coaches will take what they learned and work with each swimmer to help them better prepare for the upcoming dual meet season.
While the meet is YS Girls vs. YS Boys, they do not compete directly against one another by time (this would not be fair). Instead, the meet is scored out using National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association’s (or NISCA’s) Powerpoint system. For example, a 29.0 second 50 yard Freestyle for a girl is awarded 59 points whereas a boy going the exact same, 29.0, is awarded 26 points. Or, to earn equal points, the boy must swim a 26.19 in the 50 freestyle. It’s a great way to even out the playing field by gender and match up the two squads. Scores were tallied out to whichever team had the fewer participants in each race. So, if the boys had only 2 swimmers in the race while the girls had 4, only the top 2 girls would score points…again, to balance out the meet.
This meet shows where YS stands early in the season. There were some surprisingly fast early-season swims. There were swims at or close to personal bests, and there were many swims performed for the first time by brand new swimmers. It is always exciting to see each and every swimmer’s first race of the season. This year was no different.
At the end of the day, the bragging rights this year (and wager of breakfast) was won by the YS Girls’ Team (2,139-1,294). The boys fought valiantly, but the girls prevailed. The meet was well done by all.
As the meet concluded and cheers from the YS Boys to the YS Girls and YS Girls to the YS Boys were done, the entire team got together. Coach Brennan reminded the team that they are all in this together, and truly we are one team. And that the true success of the team can best be defined by how well the team works with one another and supports one another. The final thought for the day came in the form of a cheer, “WE ARE…YS!!! WE ARE…YS!!! WE ARE…YS!!!”
